Supporting a Cause

What do The December 5th Fund and the Missouri Department of Corrections have in common? We want to help those who are dealing with cancer.

I’ll admit, I was a little hesitant when first approached by the MODOC until the Institutional Activity Coordinator explained why they wanted to support our organization. A resident that is currently going through rehabilitation wanted to raise money during the month of November for a local non-profit organization that specifically dealt with families and cancer.  After considerable research by the Coordinator, he came upon The December 5th Fund through a referral, and he knew immediately that we were the right organization for this initiative.

The concept is quite simple, the men currently going through rehabilitation at their Pacific facility have the option to continue to purchase their shaving supplies or opt-out and donate to The December 5th Fund for the month of November. We’re halfway through the month, and over $1,000 has already been raised. If this campaign proves to be successful, it will get rolled out to the additional 15-16 facilities in the State of Missouri for November of 2017, all of which will benefit The December 5th Fund.

I learned an important lesson after our initial discussions; these men have already been judged, and it’s not up to me to cast any further judgment. Giving back to the community by supporting a charity can aid in the rehabilitation process.

Cancer affects all of us, and we all want to help.
